“Live or die, but don’t poison everything.” –Saul Bellow.
I’ve fallen in love with the HBO series Six Feet Under and just finished watching the third season. I watched the first two discs (5 episodes) of the fourth season on Friday night. The last episode I saw was pretty intense and I’m DYING* for more…but won’t be able to continue with it until Wednesday night. I mailed the discs back to Netflix on Saturday, they will be processed on Tuesday because of the holiday, and the next two discs will be in my mailbox on Wednesday. I couldn’t find the episodes I wanted to watch next online, so I will have to wait.
I’m having a hard time articulating why I love this show so much. The characters are lovable, genuine, and funny; The plot lines are amazing, yet believable, but there’s more to it than that. The characters are surrounded by death, but the show is really about living life to its fullest, finding happiness, being good, and all the stuff we take for granted day in and day out. Six Feet Under has an almost-perfect combination of carpe diem and memento mori, things that I think we all need to have a healthy dose of on a regular basis. Well, I know I do.
*No pun intended. (snicker)
